THE SHORT ANSWER

First distinguish a tear in the mesh from a gap around the screen or a damaged frame. Look from a safe indoor position without pushing on the screen. Record the product type and the location of the damage before ordering a repair kit or replacement. Keep children away from the window: even an intact insect screen cannot prevent a fall.

Before you try anything

Keep the window closed while making observations whenever possible, and keep children and pets away. Never lean on, push against or load-test a screen. Do not climb, reach outside, remove fall-protection hardware or alter an emergency escape opening. If the screen is hanging loose or could fall, keep people clear on both sides and contact maintenance or a window professional instead of trying to catch or secure it from the opening.

Before you begin

For a conventional framed insect screen at a household window. This guide helps document visible damage and obtain the right repair advice; it does not teach rescreening or removal. Retractable screens, storm-door screens, security screens and window fall-prevention devices need their own instructions. A screen problem is separate from a sash that will not stay open, a window leak or a failed glass seal.

What to have on hand

A photo taken from safely inside, the window brand and series from paperwork, and a note of when the damage appeared. Include which room and which window is affected. No knife, spline roller, pry tool, ladder or replacement mesh is needed for this observation guide.

In a rental, report the problem to your landlord or property manager before making repairs. Building rules and local requirements vary.

Work through the checks

  1. 01

    Make the observation from inside

Keep the sash closed if you can see the screen through the glass. Stay on the floor and do not place furniture beneath the window to get closer. If glare, height or the window design prevents a safe view, leave that part for service. Do not open an unsafe window just to take a better photo.

  2. 02

Identify the window and screen type

Use the receipt, owner documents or an already accessible identification label. Note whether this is a fixed framed window screen or a different screen system. Andersen organizes replacement screens by window type and series; a similar color or an approximate opening size does not establish compatibility.

  3. 03

    Describe the mesh damage

Look for an obvious hole, frayed area or mesh separated from an edge. Mark the location on a photo or in a written note rather than touching it. Andersen recommends inspecting for torn or damaged mesh. If you only see insects indoors, that alone does not identify this window as their entry route.

  4. 04

Separate an edge gap from frame trouble

Record whether the opening is within the mesh, where mesh meets its frame, or between the screen frame and the window. Note a visibly bent corner or missing or damaged retaining part if it can be seen safely. Do not pull the frame, bend it straight or force an unfamiliar clip; have support compare the photos with the correct product instructions.

  5. 05

    Record any recent handling

Note whether the change followed cleaning, seasonal storage or reinstallation. This history can help support assess fit and damage without proving a cause. If a screen is already safely removed, Andersen advises supporting it flat or against a sturdy surface in a dry, ventilated place, without pressure or objects falling on it. Do not remove one just to complete this step.

  6. 06

Ask for a product-specific repair decision

Send the brand, series, room, damage location and photos to manufacturer support, property maintenance or a screen/window professional. Ask whether that exact screen permits mesh repair, needs a retaining part or requires a complete replacement. Obtain the required sizing method from them; do not release the screen to measure an inaccessible opening.

What your result means

These observations help choose a next step. They do not confirm a diagnosis.

Know what happens next

Check the outcome

After a suitable repair or replacement, have the screen installed and checked using its product instructions. From a safe indoor view, confirm that the reported tear or gap has been addressed and no loose component remains visible. A good-looking mesh panel does not prove that its retainers are correct. Do not push on it to test strength, and continue the separate window-safety precautions for children.

When to call a professional

Use manufacturer support or a screen/window professional for an unidentified system, bent frame, damaged retaining hardware, recurring edge gap or any work requiring outside access. Property maintenance should handle rental repairs. If the sash or window itself will not operate safely, report that as an additional problem. Do not attach an improvised patch or fastener across an emergency escape opening or remove a guard to make a screen fit.

Take useful notes with you

A short record makes it easier to explain the problem to a landlord, technician, or responder. Do not collect notes during an emergency.

Common questions

Can I use any screen repair kit?

Check the exact screen design first. A kit that suits one frame may not suit another, and patching mesh does not correct a bent frame or loose retaining part. Ask support which repair or replacement is appropriate.

Should I push the frame back into place?

Do not force an unidentified screen or clip. Record where the gap appears and compare the exact installation instructions with support. An unstable panel is a reason to keep clear and arrange help.

Will a new screen keep a child from falling?

No. CPSC warns never to rely on insect screens to prevent children from falling from windows. Keep children away and obtain appropriate window-safety advice; replacing mesh does not create a fall-prevention device.

Can I put the screen away until spring?

Seasonal removal is a separate task governed by the window instructions and safe access. If one has already been removed safely, keep it supported and protected from pressure in a dry, ventilated place. Do not use storage as a reason to leave an unsafe opening.
