THE SHORT ANSWER
First note whether water is visibly standing in the washer or the clothes are simply wetter than usual. Those are different observations. Record the cycle status and exact message, then follow only the normal drain procedure in your model manual if conditions are safe. Stop for leakage, drain overflow or an unsuccessful drain attempt; do not open a filter or hose to release the water.
Before you try anything
Keep children and pets away. Stop if water is leaking, a drain or utility sink is backing up, the floor near power is wet, or there is smoke, a burning smell or electrical damage. Keep clear of wet electrical equipment and arrange qualified help; leave and call emergency services for fire. Do not force the door or lid, defeat its lock, open a pump filter, detach a hose or reach into a moving drum. Retained water can be hot.
Before you begin
For a household washing machine that appears to retain water at the end of a cycle. Covers display information, already visible water and accessible exterior observations. Top-load, front-load and washer-dryer combination controls differ. This guide does not cover opening a locked door, emergency draining, filter removal, pipe clearing or pump repair.
The model from paperwork, the cycle name, exact displayed code and a short account of the last load. A photo of the display from a dry position is useful. No bucket test, drain chemical, electrical tester or replacement pump is needed.
In a rental, report the problem to your landlord or property manager before making repairs. Building rules and local requirements vary.
Work through the checks
- 01
Describe what you can already see
From a dry, safe position, note water visible through a closed front-load door or an already safely open, stationary top-load washer. Do not open a locked or hot machine to inspect it. If you only have soaked clothing, record that separately; do not assume the tub is full.
- 02
Read the cycle and message
Record whether the machine says it is washing, rinsing, draining, spinning or finished. Copy the complete code instead of choosing a part from it. LG describes OE on its front-load washers as a drainage error with more than one possible cause; that label is not a code dictionary for other brands.
- 03
Record load, spin and detergent choices
Whirlpool notes that a gentle or slow-spin setting can leave clothing wetter, while load imbalance and excess suds can interfere with operation. Note those choices and visible foam without adding detergent or another load. These clues do not establish a blocked pump, and a wet-load concern may differ from standing water.
- 04
Look at the drain route without disturbing it
Only where already visible and safely accessible, note a crushed or sharply bent hose section or overflow at the receiving drain. Record recent installation or appliance movement. Do not pull the machine out, disconnect the hose, change its height or run water into a bucket to test it. Installation requirements belong to the exact manual.
- 05
Use a documented drain control only when safe
If there is no leak, backup, electrical concern or unusual noise, check the model instructions for a normal drain or cancel-and-drain operation. Follow that procedure once without overriding a lock. If you have already tried it unsuccessfully, do not repeat it. Stop if water backs up, an error returns or the machine does not drain as instructed.
- 06
Give the right person the whole pattern
Send the model, code, cycle, water or wet-load observation, foam and recent changes. A household drain that backs up needs a plumber or property maintenance; a persistent machine error needs appliance service. If the source is unclear, report both observations. In a rental, contact maintenance before arranging repair or moving the machine.
What your result means
These observations help choose a next step. They do not confirm a diagnosis.
| What you notice | What it tells you | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Clothes are wet but no standing water is established | Spin selection or load behavior may be relevant | Record the cycle and fabric settings; follow the manual without assuming a drain blockage. |
| Water remains after the cycle or normal drain procedure | Drainage needs further assessment | Leave the door, filter and hoses closed and request service. |
| A drain code is displayed | The control has detected a condition to investigate | Copy the exact code and model; do not order a pump from the code alone. |
| A standpipe or utility sink backs up | The household drainage route needs attention | Stop further water discharge and contact maintenance or a plumber. |
| Visible foam or recent installation accompanies the problem | Detergent or installation details are useful clues | Report them; do not add chemicals or alter the drain setup by guesswork. |
Know what happens next
Check the outcome
After an allowed control recovery or an appropriate repair, confirm during normal use that the cycle finishes, the reported water clears and there is no leak, overflow or recurring error. If clothing remains wetter than expected, compare the selected spin setting with the fabric-care instructions. One successful drain does not prove that a recurring restriction or fault is repaired.
When to call a professional
Use appliance service for retained water after the normal procedure, a returning code, unusual noise or a drain arrangement you cannot safely assess. Use a plumber or maintenance for a backing-up household drain. Filter access and emergency draining require model-specific handling of retained water; this guide does not provide that procedure. Do not keep restarting cycles or cycling electrical power to force drainage.
Take useful notes with you
A short record makes it easier to explain the problem to a landlord, technician, or responder. Do not collect notes during an emergency.
Notes stay in this page until you leave or reload. Download a copy to keep them. They are not sent to us.
Common questions
Does an OE code prove the pump has failed?
No. On the LG front-load guidance cited here, OE means the washer cannot drain; the listed possibilities include a kinked hose and a clogged filter. Record the model and code and let service assess the cause.
Should I open the pump filter while water is inside?
Not under these checks. Manufacturer procedures deal with retained water before filter removal, and that water can be hot. Leave the filter closed and ask for model-specific service advice.
Why are the clothes soaked if the washer looks empty?
A low spin setting or load behavior can leave more water in fabric. That is different from proving water is standing in the tub. Record both the cycle choice and what you actually observed.
Can I disconnect the hose and drain into a bucket?
This guide does not use that test. It releases water and changes the drain setup. Stop for overflow and give the installer, plumber or appliance technician the observations instead.
