THE SHORT ANSWER

If your dryer will not start, check that the door closes normally, the controls are unlocked and a drying cycle is selected. Use the Start-button method in the model manual. A lit display does not identify the fault. Stop if you hear humming without tumbling or notice damage, smoke or a burning smell.

Before you try anything

Keep hands dry and children away. Do not move the dryer, open panels, reach behind it, bypass a door switch or keep holding a door shut to make it run. Stop for scorching, sparks, unusual heat or water near electrical parts. For smoke or fire, leave and call emergency services. If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, leave without operating switches or the dryer; call 911 and your gas utility from a safe place.

Before you begin

For an installed household dryer that does not begin tumbling. Covers ordinary controls and visible door obstructions. It does not cover poor drying during a running cycle, appliance installation, breaker work, electrical measurements, gas connections or internal repairs. Button names and timing vary by model.

What to have on hand

The model number from an already accessible label or purchase record, the owner manual, and a note or photo of the control display. No tools or electrical tester are needed.

In a rental, report the problem to your landlord or property manager before making repairs. Building rules and local requirements vary.

Work through the checks

  1. 01

Record the response you already saw

Note whether the display was blank, showed a lock or error, beeped, clicked or hummed. Record a recent outage or installation. Do not keep pressing Start to collect more examples.

  2. 02

Look at the ordinary door opening

With the machine stopped, check for a garment caught at the door or visible latch. Move loose laundry back into the drum and close the door normally. A broken catch, scorched switch or door that needs force belongs with service.

  3. 03

    Check the selected setting

Find Control Lock or Child Lock in the manual. Release it only by the documented button sequence. Select a normal drying cycle appropriate for the load; an end-of-cycle wrinkle option is not necessarily a new cycle.

  4. 04

Use the documented Start action once

Some controls require a press and hold; others differ. Follow the exact manual rather than applying a universal number of seconds. If ordinary corrections do not start the machine, stop here.

  5. 05

Separate a no-start report from a drying complaint

If the drum starts normally but clothes remain wet, use the related long-drying guide. If the machine hums without turning or stops again, arrange service. Neither sound nor a lit panel proves which internal part failed.

  6. 06

    Prepare the service handoff

Share the model, display text, door behavior and setting correction already tried. For a newly installed dryer, contact the installer. Leave power-supply checks, gas work, fuses, belts and switches to qualified service.

What your result means

These observations help choose a next step. They do not confirm a diagnosis.

What you noticeWhat it tells youNext step

Know what happens next

Check the outcome

After an ordinary setting or loading correction, confirm normal starting with the door closed and no warning signs. Follow the manual, keep the lint filter fitted and clean, and remain home while the dryer runs. Report a repeat failure instead of repeatedly resetting the machine.

When to call a professional

Arrange qualified service for a damaged door or switch, persistent code, blank controls, repeated failure or unusual sound. Do not order an internal part from this symptom alone. A gas smell, smoke, sparking or burning smell ends these checks immediately.

Take useful notes with you

A short record makes it easier to explain the problem to a landlord, technician, or responder. Do not collect notes during an emergency.

Notes stay in this page until you leave or reload. Download a copy to keep them. They are not sent to us.

Common questions

Does the light mean the dryer has all the power it needs?

A light only records that a light worked. It cannot replace a qualified assessment of the appliance and supply.

Should I hold the door closed while pressing Start?

No. A door that only works while held needs service; do not defeat its normal closure.

Should I replace the thermal fuse?

This guide does not diagnose that part. Use qualified service to identify the cause and any underlying problem.
